A True Life Cinderella Story

In cinemas from November 17, 2023

In the far rural reaches of Dnipropetrovsk, in Eastern Ukraine, (renamed in 2016 to Dnipro) Ukraine’s fourth largest city, inside the walls of a soviet style almost prison like building, a building filled with stagnant odours and darkness, a baby girl awaited. Just next door was the professional soccer training camp, two completely different worlds next door to one another.
“I believe it was orphanage number one in the rural part of the city next to the professional soccer training camp which I thought was so interesting.”

Being only an infant, her photo on the Reece’s Rainbow website, a grant foundation helping find families for children with Down syndrome and other special needs in 26 countries throughout the world, reached out and grabbed Jennifer Sanchez’ heart.
Their two oldest boys helped choose which child the Sanchez family would sign up as warriors for on the 2009 Christmas Angel Tree Project. Hector and Jennifer had found Reece’s Rainbow after their third son was born with Down syndrome.

They chose ‘Sofiya’ to fundraise for and to hopefully help find her a family. However, once they received the ornament with the photo of Sofiya after their donation to the Christmas Angel Tree (now known as the Miracle of Adoption Christmas campaign), Jennifer knew she wanted their family to be her family.
Jennifer’s husband Hector thought and prayed about it and they began the adoption process to bring her home in June of 2010!
“Her photo is what drew us not only to her but to the idea of adoption. We never had “adoption” on our list of things to do but when we saw Sofia’s photo and made a donation it completely stirred something inside of me and before I knew it we were blazing full steam ahead to bring her home.”
International adoption can be a lengthy process. It’s very doable and worth all the forms and checks but it can seem daunting at first.
“The whole adoption experience was surreal. It felt very lonely and isolating between the language barrier and the remoteness of the orphanage.”

The time in country can vary and Jennifer recounts how hard that was.
“It was hard leaving our boys behind for such a long time and not knowing when we would get a court date and feeling quite trapped by that was also really hard. I don’t have super fond memories because that was so hard to do but we were on a mission to bring our girl home. Also having to leave and come back a month later due to some unusual circumstances with our adoption coordinator and frequent Ukrainian holiday shut downs made it very emotional as well. We literally felt like fish out of water. We found Ukraine to be very unique and I hope to someday return with new eyes.”
“It definitely takes a village…” Jennifer says in regards to how she and Hector as a couple, and their family manage Sofia’s career and to make sure all four of their children get the opportunities and experiences they are meant for. Sofia is the youngest in her family and has three amazing brothers. “We try and nurture each of their interests and talents and needs.”
“Not only did I imagine a daughter to complete our family… but I also longed to give my son Joaquin a sibling like him. He has Down syndrome too and I thought what a beautiful thing it would be for Sofia and Joaquin to have each other.”
Sofia Sanchez plays Wovey in Hunger Games Ballad of Snakes and Songbirds. It isn’t her first time acting but is definitely her largest role to date. It is just the beginning of big and bigger things for her, surely, as people worldwide love her portrayal of Wovey and there’s even a #TeamWovey of people who, having seen the film, are so moved, even days later still are moved to tears thinking of her in the film.
I asked Sofia some questions and she is such a sweet, fun girl, it was such a joy to read her replies! Even having known Jennifer and her family since they came to Reece’s Rainbow in 2009, I felt like I was having a chat with a celebrity and loved getting to know her!
