Primary Diagnosis: Down syndrome
Down syndrome, muscular hypotonia, cognitive developmental delay, moderate mental delay and behavioral disorder.
Listed: Jun 2024
*** I am eligible for a $15,000 Older Child Grant! For more information or to inquire about this child, please email childinquiry@reecesrainbow.org ***
Alina’s file was updated in Feb 2024.

At the age of 21 months old, Alina was admitted to the hospital with leukemia. Fortunately, her treatments worked and her leukemia was cured. However, Alina also has Down Syndrome and her mother could not care for her.  She is currently not taking any medication. She drinks a lot of water during the day, which led to a medical evaluation as to why she drinks so much, but nothing was found.

As is the case with many children with Down Syndrome, Alina loves to give and receive affection. She is enrolled in an inclusive academic program where she attends sixth grade. She interacts in a positive way with her peers and participates in class. Alina cannot say the days of the week, but she knows what she is supposed to do daily. Even though Alina needs to be told what to do she somehow finds out the way to solve problems on her own.

Alina is able to use the restroom and she has been walking since the age of 3. She has been diagnosed with muscular hypotonia, for which she goes to physical, occupational, speech, and psychological therapies. Her fine motor skills are continuing to develop, and Alina cannot fully write or read yet. A special academic curriculum has been designed for her for some subjects. Alina said her first words when she was 4 years old. She has a cyst in her brain and is monitored periodically. The foster mother stated that the child was able to talk and most of her words were correctly pronounced but after having surgery on her tonsils in 2018, there has been a setback on her language skills. However, her language comprehension is the same.

Alina loves to play games on a cell phone, and she is a great helper around the house. She is a very talkative girl who loves to wear dresses. She also likes to color and draw. She easily makes friends and loves to interact with peers. It has been observed that many times, Alina has great leadership skills when it comes to organizing games among her peers. She can verbally express (in a limited way) her feelings and emotions. She interacts in a positive way with adults, peers, younger children, and animals. Alina has learned to be independent in many ways.

Philip

Boy, Age: 11
Country Code: E-11
Region: Europe
Primary Diagnosis: Down syndrome
Listed: Feb 2024
*** I am eligible for a $15,000 Older Child Grant! For more information or to inquire about this child, please email childinquiry@reecesrainbow.org ***
Philip is a charming and inquisitive young boy with a tender heart and a keen interest in the world around him. Although language poses a challenge for him, with difficulties in speech and vocabulary, he is able to understand simple directions and express himself with basic sentences. His abilities in non-verbal communication are a strength, helping to support and enhance his spoken words. While written language and abstract concepts such as time and money are challenging for him, his non-verbal skills greatly aid his interactions.

Despite facing motor skill limitations typical of his condition, which affect balance and coordination, Philip is remarkably independent in day-to-day activities. He can manage personal care routines such as eating and hygiene with minimal supervision and dresses without assistance, though may require guidance in selecting suitable clothing based on weather conditions. Philip sleeps well and follows a regular routine but benefits from support in other daily tasks.

Among Philip’s favorite activities, he relishes the simple pleasures of walking, drawing, and engaging with the world of letters and words in his own unique way—he enjoys “writing.” Although the marks he makes may not form recognizable words, he delights in having adults “read” his creations. He has a passion for football and admires players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

His social interactions are an area where Philip truly shines. He is strong in building relationships with those around him—proactive and animated with peers, demonstrating a particular fondness for younger children. When it comes to adults, Philip is affectionate and seeks connection and warmth, establishing bonds with preferred caregivers and understanding the importance of rules and boundaries.

Philip is ready to embrace a loving family who will understand and respond to his emotional needs. His new family should be prepared to provide the unique care required in cases of Trisomy 21, which includes attention to his medical needs like heart conditions and vision care, as well as understanding his background and history. This family will receive in Philip a child who offers boundless warmth and the potential for rewarding growth and connection.

Jais is generally healthy — it is reported he needs glasses. Jais is calm and loving towards those around him. He expresses his desires easily.  A specific agency has a $3,000 grant available for his adoption.

Update Feb 2020: This file is old, so the information is from one year ago. He is verbal. He attends speech therapy. He has some difficulty pronouncing some words. His speech is delayed according to his age. A year ago he was using diapers, but he was telling when he had to get it changed because he felt discomfort. He is very affectionate, very loving, and respectful with adults. He follows norms and rules. He was sometimes pulling the hair of peers at school. The neurologist states he is a child that has progressed a lot since he has been receiving therapies and recommended that he not stop them.

Agency staff met Jais in July 2022: Jais is a cute little guy who is described as calm and loving towards those around him. He expresses his desires easily. Jais is currently attending school and is in the second grade. It has been a process for him to adjust to being with other children. Jais likes music and he dances to the rhythm. He likes to be cuddled and touched, especially by his foster parents. In addition to having Down syndrome, Jais likely also has Autism. Due to his potential autism diagnosis, Jais has a hard time with transitions, changes, and strangers. He loves cars, especially being inside one! His foster parents take him for vacations, and he enjoys going to the beach. He loves being in the car so much, that he doesn’t even mind if he’s in there for hours…so road trips are a go! Jais can say the words, “mom,” “dad,” “water,” “ayyaya” and “hey.” Jais sleeps through the night, but has a special position that he feels most comfortable in. He likes to first fall asleep with his foster mother in her bed and then be taken to his bed. Jais wakes up at 5:30 a.m. and cuddles with his foster parents for a little bit. Jais is a good eater, but oatmeal doesn’t make his stomach feel well. Jais has been living with his current foster family since he was two months old. Jais started walking at four years old and his foster mother is now trying to teach him how to ride a bike. He is now able to chew and swallow.

She willingly engages with others, regardless of age. Bria shows affection spontaneously and reciprocates when it is given to her, which suggests that she is capable of forming healthy relationships and bonds with others.

Bria may not be able to speak with words, but her actions speak volumes. Her gestures and expressions convey her emotions and needs in a way that her caretakers understand. Her ability to dress herself independently shows her determination and self-sufficiency. Bria may communicate differently than others, but her message is clear: she is capable, strong, and deserving of love.

When faced with unfamiliar faces, Bria can feel overwhelmed and anxious. She may struggle to trust new people. It is important for those around her to be patient and understanding, allowing her the time and space she needs to feel comfortable and secure in new environments.
